lifetime

has two meanings

(sort of)

it’s a measure, an amount of time

we sometimes act like it’s fixed,

even though we don’t know it yet

“it lasts a lifetime,”

we say.

“a lifetime’s supply of chocolate”

“a lifetime of success”

but why measure with a unit we don’t know?

one we won’t know, until we can’t know anything ever again

so then there’s another meaning

(sort of)

less of a measure

more of a process

a collection of instances

not the amount of time in your life,

but the time in your life

all of the time:

years,

days,

hours,

every fraction of a second

maybe it still fits the official definition

but it’s also the opposite

(sort of)

maybe life doesn’t have to be about measures

maybe it can be about the pieces the measure is made of
